Werner van Gent - Leben zwischen Krieg und Musik

Der Dokumentarfilm handelt über das Leben des Kriegsjournalisten Werner van Gent. Es geht auch um die Frage was guter Journalismus ist und wie man es verarbeitet, solche Grausamkeiten zu sehen. Im Fall von Werner van Gent spielt die Musik dabei eine zentrale Rolle.

Es wurden in vielen Ländern gefilmt über 2 Jahre (Griechenland, Italien, Deutschland, Niederlande, Schweiz, Rumänien, Ungarn) und Filmmaterial der langjährigen Karriere von Werner van Gent aus diversen Krisengebieten mit verarbeitet.

Hochkarätige MusikerInnen wie Patricia Kopatchinskaja und James Brandon Lewis sind mit ihrer Kunst auch Teil des Filmes.

Ein Dokumentarfilm über einen prominenten Kriegsberichterstatter wie Werner van Gent zu realisieren, setzt gegenseitiges Vertrauen voraus. Eine Herausforderung und gleichzeitig auch einmalige Gelegenheit, war der Zugriff auf sein TV Archiv mit teils unveröffentlichten Aufnahmen von insgesamt über 900 Stunden, die gezielt im Film eingesetzt werden konnten.

Diese ungefilterten, authentischen und oft schockierenden Aufnahmen sind nicht nur Zeitzeugen geschichtlicher Ereignisse, sie bilden auch die Grundlage für das Lebenswerk des Protagonisten. Der Film lebt aber auch von spontanen Ereignissen, die sich während der Produktion ergaben.

Meine Intention war es, den Zuschauer:innen einen realitätsnahen Einblick in die tragischen Ereignisse zu gewähren und zeitgleich auch die Möglichkeit zu geben, diese Eindrücke zu verarbeiten, indem der Film zeigt, wie der Protagonist damit umging: Durch Musik, Natur und menschliche Beziehungen.

The documentary is about the life of war journalist Werner van Gent. It's also about the question of what good journalism is and how you deal with seeing such atrocities. In the case of Werner van Gent, music plays a central role.

Scenes were filmed in many countries over a period of 2 years (Greece, Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Romania, Hungary) and film material from Werner van Gent's long career from various crisis areas was also processed.

Top-class musicians such as Patricia Kopatchinskaja and James Brandon Lewis are also part of the film with their art.

A challenge and at the same time a unique opportunity was the access to his TV archive with partly unpublished recordings totalling over 900 hours, which could be used specifically in the film. The intention was to give the audience a realistic insight into the tragic events and at the same time to give them the opportunity to process these impressions by showing how the protagonist dealt with them: Through music, nature and human relationships.

Unser Dokumentarfilm wurde zum Best Documentary an den UNOFEX Film Awards gekürt! 254 Filme wurden eingereicht, 11 nominiert und vier als Gewinner präsentiert. Zudem gewann der Film ein "award of excellence - special mention: Documentary Feature" - ein Top Ten Award bei der Accolade Global Film Competition! https://accoladecompetition.org/. An den Los Angeles Independent Film Festival Awards gewann Michael Magee einen Award für "Beste Regie eines Documentary Feature". Am 56. Houston International Film Festival gewannen wir den Silver Remi Award für Documentary Features. Das World Fest Houston ist eines der ältesten und grössen Festivals der Welt mit um die 5000 Einreichungen in diversen Kategorien aus über 70 Ländern.

Der Film war 2023 Teil der Solothurner Filmtage und ist selektioniert für ein Filmfestival auf Kreta.

Further our documentary film "Werner van Gent - life between war and music" won an award of excellence - special mention: Documentary Feature at the Accolade Global Film Competitio, an award for Best Director of a Documentary Feature at LAIFFA (Los Angeles Independent Film Festival Awards), was part of the "Solothurner Filmtage 2023", was Finalist at the London Greek Film Festival and has a Selection of a Filmfestival in Kreta 2023. At the 56th Houston International Film Festival! World Fest Houston, which is one of the oldest and largest festivals with around five thousand submissions in numerous film categories from over 70 nations, we won a silver Remi Award for Documentary Feature.
